The book is presents two perspectives in the analysis of the tribes of the hindoo Kush region of Central Asia. The first half of the book is a geographical and anthropological account of Dardistan in the last quarter of the 19th century, while the second half is devoted to the linguistics of the region beginning a systematic investigation into the vocabulary and grammar of the Dardic and Kafir languages.
